Happy Anniversary

May 24, 2009

Today is a very special day, exactly 100 years since the beginning of the Britsh Boy Scouts and British Girl Scouts. The centenary is a great acomplishment. The British scouts have been through us and downs and are on a revival now.We wish them a happy, happy, happy 100 years, and here's to 100 more.

The Girl Scouts of Jamaica may be fairly new, but are built on this foundation of history and tradition for 100 years, the perfect mix of innovation, divesity, and experience. In celebrating the centenary there are ongoing activities. The first order of business, a membership drive. We want to see as many girls as possible having the opportunity to become a part of our organisation. Under the campaign theme, "Join the celebration, join the fun, join today", centenary greetings are being sent out all across Jamaica. We look forward to the spaking of interest and the formation of new groups.

Welcome to all. Join the celebration, join the fun, join today!

Welcome, welcome all

January 18, 2009

We have to welcome more troops who have come or are coming on board!

Welcome to Ardenne Prep in Kingston, Little Einsteins in Kingston, and Effortville Primary School in May Pen. We have also had contact from St Ann and St Elizabeth.  We are happy to see our association growing so nicely.

We were pleased to be included in the first annual Kiddiefest at the Hope Gardens on Boxing Day, December 26, 2008. All walks of Jamaica were there with their children and we promoted the Doctorbirds and Peenie Wallies. Our guests enjoyed playing our games and the young ones won prizes for their efforts. It was an enjoyable day. There are pictures in the photo album of the event.

Some of our brothers and sisters in scouting around the world are celebrating Thinking Day on February 22. We recognize your special day and wish you a Happy Thinking Day from the Girl Scouts of Jamaica.

Yours in Scouting

Launched!

October 8, 2008

Well the first promise ceremony was held on Sunday and lone junior scout Priscilla McClure was enrolled at her home on October 5, 2008, the chosen launch day. Joining the launch will be two troops, a Doctorbird Troop at Stella Maris and a Peenie Wallie Troop at Avondale. Their promise ceremonies will be held in the next few days.

Who knew there were so many international scouting associations? I have done an extensive websearch and found about ten! But I am pleased to say that I have researched, contacted and chosen the very first international association formed to be our umbrella, the World Order of Scouts. So now I have the task of updating all the handbooks to reflect this development. The website has already been updated and links have been posted.

So who will be next? We look forward to hearing from you.

 Yours In Scouting - Patoo

Getting on with business

August 19, 2008

Well, I was very busy for 4 days before going off to my annual summer camp for all of last week. Now that I've been back for 3 days I have got very busy again. So what are the updates?

The Peenie Wallie Handbook and the Doctorbird Handbook are both in the Handbooks folder on the downloads page. The troop/member registration form is in the Forms folder on the downloads page. I'm currently working on finishing up the Girl Scouts Handbook. It ended up being Junior and Senior in one book. There was too much repetition as two separate books.

Thought of a great incentive. All registrations received before October 5 would be free of charge for 2008-2009! I better put that up on the news page.

Well I'm going back to work on the books to be able to add more downloads so later people.

The Beginning

August 8, 2008

Maybe it was the spirit of Independence, the courage of our forefathers to be pioneers and builders, ..... or maybe it was the Olympic spirit, to dare to dream, but whatever it was I finally went ahead and resigned from the Girl Guides on August 5, 2008 and dared to dream publicly of the Girl Scouts of Jamaica, a tiny thought which has been pushed in the back of my mind for some months. So on that morning I got up, wrote the resignation, and opened  this site. All the energy, research and collection of information and ideas have been pouring out ever since.

Well as I am no literary luminary, I don't think I will be waxing poetic again. But I love to keep people abreast of what is happening and this is a quick easy way to acieve that goal. So what is on this site so far?

  • A brief description of the units on the home page
  • Colouring pages of all the World Centres (downloads page)
  • The lyrics for the theme songs of all the World Centres (downloads page)
  • The Doctorbird Handbook

I am looking forward to getting more information up soon. I'm currently finishing up the Peenie Wallie Handbook and Junior Scouts...
