National Service Project

Each Triennium the Chief Commissioner will select a National Service Project for all the Girl Scouts to participate in. In this Introductory Year and the First Triennium (2008-2012) the National Service Project of the Girl Scouts of Jamaica is the Special Olympics Jamaica.

In particular, Junior and Senior Scouts will be called upon to act as volunteers at the many events which are held at the parish level and nationally, throughout the year. Scouts at all levels can be involved in fund raising projects which are critical for Special Olympics Jamaica to run their programmes.

Special Olympics Jamaica

Special Olympics Jamaica is a leading Program in the Caribbean region. In 2004 the Program hosted the first-ever Special Olympics Caribbean Regional Games and also held its first MedFest health screening program to recruit more athletes into the movement. As one of the longest-standing Special Olympics Programs in the Caribbean, Jamaica serves as a model for acceptance and inclusion. Special Olympics Jamaica celebrates their 30th Anniversary in 2009.

With the establishment of special education schools and the implementation of ground-breaking research, Jamaica is at the forefront of attitude change toward people with intellectual disabilities.

Jamaican Success in 2007 International Games

Jamaica secured a record 57 medals at the 12th Special Olympic World Games In China in October, shattering the previous best of 37 garnered in Ireland in 2003.

The Jamaicans participated in eight sporting disciplines. They were: Track and Field, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Bocce, Badminton, Swimming and Roller Skating.
